DOLENJSKE TOPLICE
ABOUT THE TOWN
If you travel southeast from Ljubljana towards the picturesque valley of Krka river, you'll suddenly encounter a completely different world in Soteska village. Ahead of you shows Topliska valley, surrounded on the right by the mysterious jungles of Kocevski Rog, and on the left by low hills of Dolenjska, planted with vineyards and vineyard cottages. Scattered along the valley are numerous villages, giving the friendly impression of the land. Dolenjske Toplice is the center town of Topliska Valley. In direct translation the name means Spa of Lowlands, and that's exactly what you get here with thermal waters and spas surrounding the site and putting a special stamp in the area's development. Hot water vents have marked the development of the place since ancient times, which was later emphasised by the archaeological sites in the immediate vicinity of the town.
The first written mentioning of Dolenjske Toplice dates back to 1228, when Henry IV., Margrave of Istria, gave part of his large property to Cistercian Abbey in Sticna. In 1385 the lands came in the possession of the Counts of Auersperg from Turjak, who after the models of some of then popular Central European spas, decided to develop at that time simple people's spa baths into more distinguished and luxurious spa baths. The place has played an important role during the First and Second World War. After World War II, the place began to develop in the rehabilitation center Balnea. This development was particularly accelerated after 1974, when the spa of Dolenjske Toplice joined forces with the successful company Krka Pharmaceuticals from Novo Mesto. Thermal water springs in Dolenjske Toplice are by definition slightly mineralized, with the temperature of the human body, which is most suitable for the health of the locomotor system diseases and injuries.
